Gaia's Garden Herbals Holy Basil/Tulsi Tincture is made with fresh, organically grown Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), harvested at peak over the course of the summer, tinctured in 100 proof vodka. Each bottle contains 2 ounces.
Tulsi is one of the most important herbs in Indian herbal medicine, where it is revered as the herb sacred to the Goddess Lakshmi. It is an herb of many uses including its ability to reduce blood sugar levels making it especially helpful for diabetics. Indian research has shown that Tulsi helps lower blood pressure. It is antispasmodic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and reduces fever. Tulsi is an adaptogenic herb and as such helps reduce stress. It is also a useful herb to help with ADD and ADHD.
My Tulsi story began over three years ago, one gray, wet, very rainy summer. Living in Maine where our winters can be long, I always look forward to summer, and crave the sun. In fact, I think I need the sun as much as I need oxygen to breathe. That summer I was getting extremely depressed. At first it was more emotional, along with a certain amount of frustration at not being able to garden and harvest (since so many plants were rotting). Then I noticed the depression had gotten into my very bones. It felt as though something was scratching from my insides wanting OUT. I work in a small health food store, so asked a co-worker for her suggestions. She recommended that I give Holy Basil a try. So I purchased a bottle of New Chapter's Holy Basil and took 3 capsules right away. Within two hours - no lie - the scratching was gone and I felt considerably lighter. I was amazed! I continued to take Holy Basil for the rest of the summer (and yes, the sun did come out once in a while and I was able to harvest veggies and herbs, though not in great abundance) and into the winter and spring. Since the supplements were expensive, I decided to grow my own and make tincture, which is what I have been doing ever since. An added benefit: my blood sugar level decreased from almost borderline pre-diabetes to normal!
The generally recommended dose is 1/2 tsp. 3 times daily. I'm not a doctor and can't recommend or prescribe anything. So you'll have to use your intuition and find out what works for you.
